Six Places in a Different Light – Manchester’s New Art Trail
Six Places In A Different Light is a visually captivating art trail in Greater Manchester that aims to promote mental health and wellbeing. It was created by creative studio and multidisciplinary arts collective We Are Willow in collaboration with international art producer Wild in Art.
Trail Dates
The trail will be open from October 30 to December 11 in honour of Mental Health Day, an international day for mental health education. The Greater Manchester Integrated Care Partnership, Salford City Council, The University of Salford, LandsecU+I, and Arts Council England fund and support this initiative, resulting in several head sculptures erected around the city.
Trail Location
The trail passes through Mayfield Park, Greengate Square, the Peel Park Campus of the University of Salford, the area outside the Imperial War Museum North, and MediaCity UK. It will be encouraged for audiences to use the trail to have candid discussions about mental health and to use creativity to connect with new communities.
This year’s trail is the most recent sequence of pieces that began in 2016. When the A Different Light project started, it included three thousand small, custom head sculptures, an album of spoken word and music, and four videos.
Artists
Six enormous head sculptures will be on exhibit for the 2023 trail; each has been individually embellished by painter Ekun Richard, cartoonist Tom J Newell, and community artist Kelly Ma. The artists collaborated with BlueSci in Trafford & Stockport, District Mind, Manchester Mind, START, and The Jamie Horrocks Trust in addition to We Are Willows’ specially composed 12-track spoken word and music album.
The enormous sculptures have already been delivered to Mayfield Park, where they will be kept while the painters work on them in a special painting area. The sculptures will be finished and put up for public viewing at various sites around Greater Manchester.
Laura Percy, LandsecU+I’s development director, stated: “Mayfield is happy to support Six Places In A Different Light. It’s a great concept to have this sculpture trail encourage people to discuss mental health, and what better setting than the city’s newest park, a quiet space for contemplation? Mayfield’s unique blend of culture and environment is essential, and we’re excited to see many more people come through the park in the coming months.”
