Halcyon Gallery – Dominic Harris Feeding Consciousness

Halcyon Gallery is in London’s Bond Street and was established in 1982. This summer, Dominic Harris’ ambitious new exhibition, Feeding Consciousness, takes centre stage. So, who is Dominic Harris, and why Should you make your way to the Halcyon Gallery? Read on to find out.

Dominic Harris is a trailblazing British digital artist, who allows the audience to explore his elaborately crafted worlds by utilising mystical, imaginative elements to fuel the mind. Feeding Consciousness is Dominic’s most ambitious exhibition to date, built with detailed worlds that spark the imagination and give a glimpse of the infinite. Although Harris uses technology, his digital paintings for his visual creations are created by hand in a method similar to traditional oil painting. Through the use of technology, he is able to produce movement and interactivity that no regular still life could achieve. 

In order to fully immerse the audience in Harris’ fictional worlds and characters, five pieces are shown in a unique room within Halcyon’s new residence. Endurance is a 360-degree virtual reality experience that immerses players in a hyperreal Antarctic landscape inspired by the route taken by famed explorer Ernest Shackleton. Endurance requires no VR headset, hardwear, or other sensory proxies to enter the virtual world. Harris depicts the person as the master of that world, with the spectator reacting to their actions as they are recorded and processed by sensors and code.

Harris concentrates on his favourite butterflies in Elements, an immersive multi-sensory installation, where the butterflies, for the first time, have individual identities that reflect the five fundamental elements of the universe: Wood, Earth, Water, Fire, and Metal. The movements and interactions of the butterflies serve as a reminder of the connectivity of all things and the necessity of maintaining harmony in our interactions with the natural world.
