Room to Breathe April 2, 2022 – April 6, 2025
For many of us, the discord and overstimulation of the modern world become overwhelming and hard to deal with. Room to Breathe is a location specifically designed to facilitate a more contemplative engagement with art. Based at the Manchester Art Gallery, this project runs for another year and has proven to be a fantastic method of practising mindfulness and disconnecting from everything. Read on to find out more.
What to Expect
You can view a range of pieces from the Room to Breathe collection and use the in-house audio guides to assist you through mindful art exploration. The meticulous selection of furniture, colour scheme, text and audio meditations, and the quantity and height of art pieces promote a deep connection with art while lessening stress. This is a space to rest, relax and restore. Wearing cutting-edge eye tracking glasses, you can enjoy a series of exceptional guided viewing experiences of the contemplative area, Room to Breathe.
The Manchester Art Gallery is collaborating with psychologists from Goldsmiths, the University of London, and KU Leuven (Belgium) in combination with the continuing research studies carried out in the wellbeing area, Room to Breathe, to provide visitors with a viewing experience that has never been seen before.
Thirty Minutes of Escapism
The thirty-minute session will allow guests to comprehend how they examine a picture visually. Every guest will have an eye-tracking pair of glasses fitted throughout the event, tracking their movements and what they look at in real-time. Following the session, participants will be asked to share their experiences with the Gallery and Goldsmiths personnel through surveys and open-ended discussions. There is no charge to participate in this event, and a café ticket will be given as payment.
You can participate in the Room to Breathe experience without a ticket by simply showing up at the gallery and asking to be admitted. This free project is a hugely popular and beneficial experience, so it is worth visiting if you are in Manchester.
