Large, dated buildings and structures might be difficult to renovate, but they can also be hugely gratifying. This blog looks at things to consider when refurbishing historical and large buildings and some examples of well-known structures that have been through the process. 

What to Consider When Refurbishing Older Structures

There are some important things to consider when refurbishing an older, substantial building. These include:

Research – It’s crucial to comprehend the building’s significance and history before beginning any work. Respecting the past is crucial when making changes to a sizable ancient building.

Licences – you could be required to apply for permits from the local government depending on the size and scope of your project. 

Skilled contractors – renovating a sizable, historic structure requires highly skilled contractors. 

Purpose – establish how the structure has been used and will be used.

Budget and quotes – obtain multiple quotes and form a realistic budget by covering all potential costs and issues.

Examples of Successful and Famous Renovations

Battersea Power Station

The Giles Gilbert Scott-designed structure, which was once used as a power plant in the 1930s, currently houses over 100 stores, cafes and restaurants, 46,000 square metres of office space, and 254 flats. 

The Turbine Hall A of the 1930s, now a feature of the shopping centre, was a ruin in 2007. Between 1975 and 1983, the structure was deactivated, and it sat vacant for nearly 30 years before being acquired in 2012 by Malaysian developers SP Setia and Sime Darby Property. The former power plant was renovated by UK architectural firm Wilkinson Eyre. 

The 1950s Turbine Hall B is now home to retailers. While Turbine Hall B’s extraction fans have been replaced with light tunnels to offer natural light, the 1930s Turbine Hall A is illuminated by a newly constructed skylight.

The control rooms, some of the most recognisable areas in the building, have been renovated alongside each of the turbine halls as part of the development. The 1930s Control Room A was transformed into an events area that would frequently be accessible to the general public.

All four of the building’s chimneys have been renovated as part of the development, and one has been made into a tourist attraction. The attraction has a glass elevator that soars through the chimney to provide exquisite views of London.
