Norwich Castle Rebrand – A Unique Design Technique
Norwich Castle has had a £13 million renovation, and the rebrand involves post-it notes and memory games. The new logo was inspired by doodles drawn by the public, who were handed a Post-it note and pen and given 10 seconds to recreate Norwich Castle from memory. Here we look at what the renovation of Norwich Castle has involved.
Norwich Castle – The History
Norwich Castle, a landmark in Norfolk, England’s cathedral city and district, was built in 1067. Since 1894, this location was initially built as a royal palace by the Normans on William the Conqueror’s instructions after the Norman Conquest of England and has been used as a museum. No monarchs ever stayed there, despite its dual purpose as a royal home and a defence castle.
Until a smaller jail was built in the late 1700s, which today houses the main gallery complex on the property, the keep was used as a prison for many years. Many noteworthy local artefacts, including works of art, archaeological finds, and natural history specimens, can be found at the museum today.
The castle has been closed while undergoing renovation but is set to re-open to the public after its exciting rebrand in 2024.
Fresh Design
A local company named The Click created a new brand identity for Norwich Castle. The original logo emphasised the castle’s commanding prominence over Norfolk by showing an outline of it as though you were looking at it from below. The bright and dark blue on either side made the overall finish considerably more dramatic, underlining the renowned landmark’s grandeur and volume. However, the previous logo was challenging to reproduce at different sizes due to the combination of colours and amount of detail.
New logo
The new logo still features the castle, but the detail has been reduced to bare essentials. The new symbol is a solid square using a black and beige colour scheme instead of a nearly 3D approach and a diversified colour palette. The name inside the cube shape makes it appear even larger, further enhancing this historical landmark’s significance. The name is written in Franklin Gothic font and is simple and easy to read against a beige background.
To achieve the ideal coherence, the nine merlons of the castle have been skillfully transformed into the emblem and are visible throughout. This rather conventional grid approach does a good job of producing a logo that is instantly recognised and indicative of the castle.
Overall, this is a strong logo that, while minimising the features as much as possible, clearly conveys the enormity and majesty of the castle.
