Why Analogue Design is Still Important
Analogue design refers to design-related processes and products that can be used without using computers or other related digital technology. Simple tools like paper and a pen, paint and a canvas, modelling clay or wood, or even basic electronics and motors can be used to communicate a message. This blog looks at why analogue design is still important in 2023 and could even be on the rise as we embrace a break from the new digital ‘norm’.
Tangible Creativity
Paper may have a finite amount of surface area, but the only thing stopping you from doing anything on the page is a pen stroke. In fact, the constraints of a sheet of paper and other analogue products frequently serve as the kinds of boundaries that inspire innovation.
Adopting an analogue approach to the design process alters the entire character of that process, regardless of whether you are an architect sketching a building, a consultant jotting down ideas for a presentation, a furniture designer holding out fabric samples, or a software designer creating a website. Placing restrictions on what you may create in terms of time, resources, and space frees the mind to think more freely and imaginatively.
Fully Immersive Process
Choosing analogue techniques and goods allows design with the least interruption and distraction—no Instagram checking, emails to check, or pinging sounds to disrupt the process. The outcomes are far from flawless or professional, but they also don’t frequently get mired in minutiae when you really just need to write the text or start doodling, like what exact shade the font should be.
This is why back-of-a-napkin-type sketches continue to be so effective, why whiteboards are an essential component of any creative workspace, and why even Silicon Valley firms like Google mandate that their designers take courses on how to sketch their ideas on paper as the first step when they are designing anything new for their websites. The design process is fluid, and software frequently stands in the way.
Let’s face it, the world of digital hardware has some stunning designs, and many of us can appreciate a wonderfully constructed laptop or sleek digital music player, but none of it is meant to last.
