Olafur Eliasson – Little Sun, Big Mission
The Little Sun is small, but serves a very BIG purpose – to provide universal access to clean energy.
Little Sun’s founders, artist Olafur Eliasson and engineer Frederik Ottesen collaborated to create a portable solar light in 2012. It was initially distributed to people living without electricity in Ethiopia, helping students study at night and families care for the children after dark, whilst reducing the amount of toxic fumes previously burnt for light within homes.
The founders continue to distribute the lights across Africa today, running projects to test and implement solar energy across the continent to help power and empower communities and businesses. It is possible that the Little Sun will pave the way for bigger projects covering agriculture and health services. Stocking this product helps to build vital funding for this important work.
A little ray of sunshine
Not only do we love the Little Sun for the amazing work that is done behind the scenes, we also think it is a genuinely brilliant solar light that will come in very handy for all sorts of things; camping, festivals, childrens bedrooms, in the garden or wherever and whenever you need some extra light. This particular design was created by Olafur Eliasson for his In Real Life exhibition at the Tate Modern. In 2003, Ólafur Eliasson presented his captivating installation at the Tate Modern “The Weather Project” featuring a suspended sun that cast warm, changing light throughout the gallery space.
