Arjuna Keshvani-Ham and Freya Gabie
Artcore Gallery in Derby will host an exhibition of Arjuna Keshvani-Ham and Freya Gabie’s forthcoming works. The two artists were chosen for Artcore’s ‘The Silence of Growing Things’ international residency programme, which took place in Bengaluru, India, in January 2024. The show promises to provide an intriguing look at contemporary art in the context of post-colonialism, ecology, environment, botanical history, and landscapes.
Freya Gabie will study the concept of healing and resilience while concentrating on the historic botanical gardens of Lalbagh and Cubbon Park. She intends to investigate the symbiotic relationship between communities and plants in Bangalore, with a particular focus on using plants for therapeutic purposes in Ayurveda.
Gabie’s work highlights our connection to the natural world since habitat loss and climate change pose an escalating danger to biodiversity, and up to 50% of contemporary medicine is derived from plants. Her investigation will focus on how migration, capitalism, and imperialism have affected this connection over time. Also, she will draw inspiration for nurturing resilience, caring, and restoration from the gardens’ environment.
The Aim of The Exhibition
With the goal of revealing the latent relationships between the city’s environment, industrial complex, and colonial past, Arjuna will continue to delve into her research on India’s colonial past. The long-term conceptual and ecological effects of land expansion in Bangalore during the colonial era pique her interest. Her goal is to examine how the city’s places, symbols, and social dynamics have been shaped by decisions made in landscape architecture.
Arjuna says he was excited to see Bangalore’s gardens, which have historically served as satellites to the UK’s botanical gardens. These gardens functioned as methodical research facilities for developments in economic botany, a highly extractive field of experimentation that was essential in the European colonial enterprise for many years. She is also excited about interacting with local voices to unearth the closer connection between individuals and their surroundings.
