Art and fashion rely on creative designs, but they are distinctively different. For many years fashion designers have looked to artists for inspiration, which has led to some outstanding and iconic collaborations. Here we look at just some of the most celebrated art and fashion collaborations.

Elsa Schapiarelli x Salvador Dalí

One of the earliest art x fashion collaborations, the ‘Organza Dinner Dress with Painted Lobster’, was designed by Elsa Schiaparelli and Salvador Dalí. This was worn elegantly for Vogue by Wallis Simpson in 1937 and remains an iconic garment of the 30s era.

Longchamp x Tracy Emin

Tracy and Longchamp joined forces to design a unique bag collection. These were nicknamed ‘monster bags’ by critics, but it did not hinder their popularity. The bag designs featured Tracy’s iconic techniques, including destroyed textiles and patchwork. The bags relate to a story about a woman travelling between cities seeking love. The collection was released to celebrate Longchamp’s 10th anniversary.

Alexander McQueen x Damien Hirst

With both parties displaying a love for skull designs, they collaborated to celebrate the 10th anniversary of McQueen’s skull print scar. Damien created 30 limited edition designs, incorporating the butterflies and insects from his Entomology series and making a skull motif with them.

Stella McCartney x Ed Ruscha

Ed Ruscha’s signature style met Stella McCartney’s #stellacares campaign in 2016. With the designer’s theme of cruelty-free production, the winter campaign images included captions like ‘Veg out’ and ‘Meat-free’ using Ruscha’s sans serif-style font from the 80s.

Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami

This is one of the most successful collaborations in fashion x art history. In 2003, Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami joined forces to create a collection of accessories. The bags fast became sought-after ‘It bags’ in the 2000s.

Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama

This is a prediction, of course, as this collaboration is fresh from the oven, but we are confident that Louis Vuitton’s second collaboration with Yayoi Kusama will go down in design history. Yayoi’s hypnotic, artistic patterns are instantly recognisable with her trademark polka-dot styles. She is a 93-year-old contemporary artist from Japan with colossal international success. The infinity dots meet Louis Vuitton’s monogram, and we couldn’t be more excited if we tried.
